Assistant Planner

Maya Baker

Maya has been at McKenna since starting out as an intern in 2022 and moving on to Assistant Planner in May of 2023. In her role, she provides support for multiple large-scale projects, including master plan and zoning ordinance updates and adoption, fair housing analyses, and other planning and policy initiatives. Maya is often found researching alternative strategies and models to learn from and utilize in new situations, or working up maps with GIS software to create clear visualizations for community engagements and final plans. Maya also provides zoning administration assistance to multiple communities and enjoys helping to build connections between municipal leaders and residents.

Maya received a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Sociology at DePaul University, and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from Taubman College at the University of Michigan.

Outside of work, Maya is also a volunteer and board member for the Great Lakes Invitational Conference Association, a non-profit that hosts Model United Nations conferences for high school students.

Back to people

I’ve lived in Michigan almost my entire life, but working at McKenna I’ve seen so much more of the state than I ever would have otherwise. I love finding ways to bring lessons from other communities, while also seeing what’s unique about each new place that I visit.
