Maya Baker

Assistant Planner

Maya has been at McKenna for a year, since starting out as an intern in May of 2022, and moving on to Assistant Planner in May of 2023. As an Assistant Planner, Maya participates in a wide range of projects for communities large and small. She has worked on numerous Master Plans at every stage of the process, from conditions analysis to community engagement to writing the final draft. She has also assisted with several zoning ordinance updates and other policy changes and has a strong understanding of municipal codes and processes. Maya has a special interest in housing policy, having worked on fair housing analyses for multiple cities. Maya received her Bachelors of Arts in Urban Sociology at DePaul University, and Masters of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College. Outside work, Maya is on the board of the Great Lakes Invitational Conference Association, a nonprofit that runs Model United Nations conferences for Michigan high school students. She is a passionate and dedicated worker, and always ready to engage in conversation about housing, planning, and history.

“I’ve lived in Michigan almost my entire life, but working at McKenna I’ve seen so much more of the state than I ever would have otherwise. I love finding ways to bring lessons from other communities, while also seeing what’s unique about each new place that I visit.
