Building Services Director

Matthew Coppler

Matthew brings more than 30 years of municipal management and leadership experience to the organization. His career spans city and town management roles across Ohio, New York, Michigan, Florida, and Connecticut, working directly with elected officials, residents, businesses, developers, and municipal staff on a wide range of community and organizational initiatives.

A significant portion of his career has been dedicated to serving Michigan communities. As City Manager in St. Clair Shores and Lincoln Park, Matthew was responsible for the day-to-day operations of municipal government, including budgeting and financial management, community and economic development, infrastructure, public services, organizational improvement, and relations with elected officials and the community. His Michigan experience includes leading initiatives involving downtown revitalization, property assessment shared services, information technology modernization, and organizational restructuring.

Across these communities, Matthew has led organizations through growth, redevelopment, infrastructure investment, financial challenges, operational improvements, and the evolving demands placed on local governments—consistently focused on improving customer service and strengthening the processes that shape residents’ experience with their local government.

At McKenna, Matthew brings this municipal executive perspective to Building Services. Having served as a City and Town Manager, he understands firsthand the challenges communities face in providing effective building and development services, recruiting and retaining qualified staff, managing workloads, responding to residents and the development community, and maintaining strong relationships with elected officials. Matthew works with communities to improve building department operations, strengthen customer service, develop effective processes, and provide the staffing and professional resources necessary to support responsible development. His experience on the municipal side allows him to approach these challenges from the perspective of the communities and leaders McKenna serves.

Matthew holds a Master of Public Administration from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelor of Arts with a specialization in Public Administration and History. He is passionate about helping communities improve government operations, encourage responsible development, and deliver high-quality services to their residents and businesses.

Back to people

Having sat on the other side of the table as a City and Town Manager, I know the pressure communities are under to deliver services residents and businesses can count on. That’s what drives to help communities turn frustration into confidence and solve challenges from the inside out.
