Phillip C. McKenna, AICP

Phil McKenna is known for a 50 year career as an urban planning and design consultant including his three decades of leadership as owner and president of McKenna, the Midwest’s highly successful community planning and design firm.  Based at the firm’s current headquarters in Northville, Michigan, (with branches in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo), Phil has partnered with hundreds of leaders and planning professionals, balancing public and private interests in the Midwest’s built environment.

Phil has led project planning for many award-winning municipal commercial and industrial redevelopment areas, neighborhood revitalization, elderly housing, mixed-use corridors, downtown rebuilding, public access design and land assembly including project finance throughout Michigan and Ohio.  He also administered Michigan municipal redevelopment programs, at times managing the turnaround of urban CDBG initiatives, supervising planning, acquisition, finance and relocation elements.

He and his firm’s colleagues prepared comprehensive plans and modernized zoning regulations for scores of Midwest municipalities, and also assisted more than 200 Midwest communities with the day-to-day implementation of zoning and building code protections and projects to the benefit of the civic realm.

A Michigan native, Phil completed his undergraduate study at Central Michigan University and received his Master of Science degree in Regional and Urban Planning from Eastern Michigan University.
