Charles Smith Already Assisting Communities in Building and Re-building Vital Places
NORTHVILLE, MI (September 18, 2006) Accomplished downtown and neighborhood planning specialist Charles F. Smith, ASLA, has joined McKenna Associates, Inc., the Great Lakes region’s largest community planning and design firm, as Principal Planner. Skilled as both a planner and a landscape architect, Mr. Smith, who goes by “Chip,” brings an interdisciplinary approach to “placemaking,” and other strategies that help communities build strong images and establish a sense of civic identity.

In addition to specializing in downtown and neighborhood plans, Mr. Smith is a skilled public participation facilitator. He has facilitated dozens of public meetings, workshops and presentations. Prior to joining McKenna Associates, Mr. Smith served as Director of Planning at the Johnson Hill Land Ethics Studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has previously worked as a landscape architect and in media relations.
Mr. Smith earned a master’s degree in landscape architecture at the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in history from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. He is available to communities throughout the Great Lakes region and based at McKenna’s headquarters in the historic Waterwheel Building in downtown Northville.
