PHILLIP MCKENNA NAMED 2007 OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL PLANNER BY MICHIGAN ASSOCIATION OF PLANNING

Unanimous board says “McKenna has improved the quality of life for millions.”

(Northville, MI; August 22, 2007) Phillip C. McKenna, AICP, PCP, President, and CEO of McKenna Associates, Inc.; has been honored with the Michigan Association of Planning’s highest award in being named 2007 Outstanding Professional Planner. In announcing the unanimous decision, the Michigan Association of Planning Awards Committee cited McKenna’s decades of work shaping Michigan communities into vital, interesting and attractive places to live, work and do business.

“Throughout his nearly 40-year career Phil McKenna has improved the quality of life for millions of Michigan residents by helping hundreds of public officials and their communities realize vibrant, interesting, functional and attractive public and private spaces,” said the awards committee in announcing its decision. “His contributions have helped public officials re-shape their communities and significantly influenced the course of planning in Michigan.”

The committee noted McKenna’s exceptional work in the areas of redeveloping blighted communities, creating well-defined downtowns, and championing New Urbanism. Additionally the Committee recognized McKenna, the owner of the Great Lakes Region’s largest planning firm, for employing, teaching, and mentoring thousands of professional planners over the course of his distinguished career.

“I’m honored to be recognized by my professional peers with this esteemed award,” said McKenna. “And I am grateful to have the privilege of working with so many of Michigan’s exceptional elected and appointed officials.”

McKenna’s many accomplishments include preparing local plans and zoning ordinances in municipalities across Michigan and Ohio. He and his firm have provided assistance on projects ranging from development of new communities and upgrading of small towns, to design of large-scale urban development and redevelopment sites and programs. McKenna's professional practice also includes downtown plans; urban neighborhood and business district planning; urban design; open space preservation and design of mixed-use centers.

McKenna will be honored formally the Michigan Association of Planning annual state-wide conference on October 19, 2007 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Michigan.
